What is sandwashed silk fabric and what different there are with regular silk fabrics?

To be strictly speaking, sand washing process of silks should belong to a kind of water washing process. It refers to washing the fabric with alkaline water, and the silk fabric is corroded by alkali, which erodes the silk fiber slightly, making the surface of silk fiber uneven and hairy.

The sand-washed silk fabric looks like a layer of white wool or gray on the surface, which makes the fabric feel “Vintage”. It is precisely because of the slight erosion of alkali that the originally hard silk fiber structure becomes softer, thus the whole fabric becomes softer as a whole.

So in general there are following “difference” or “advantage” over regular silks,

1.A lot softer in hand feel.

2.Better drape

3.Mechanical stretch on both warp and weft side of silk fabric.

4.Hairy surface, which leads to more vintage feel.

5.It is require that silk fabric that is thicker than 20mm can be done sandwashing appropriately.
