When Some of our customers talk about silk fabrics, they can not clearly understand the thickness of silk fabrics. Generally “momme”represents the thickness of silk fabrics.

So what is the meaning of momme?

19mm=19m/m=19momme

1mm=4.3056gsm (gramsper square meter)

19mm=19x4.3056=81.8gsm(grams per square meter)

In general, the larger momme, the larger weight, the more raw silk will be used, so the cost will be higher.

Some people can not distinguish silk fabrics when the thickness is similar, for example: 19mm silk fabric and 16mm silk fabric.

In fact, a computational formula can figure out the weight of silk fabric.

Computational formula:

Momme  of silk fabric * Width of silk fabric * Meter of silk fabric * 4.3056 = Weight of silk fabric

For example, Silk Satin Charmeuse 19mm width: 140cm 1meter

19x1.40x1x4.3056=114.5g

So weighting the silk fabric (silk satin charmeuse), the weiht is about 114.3g to 114.5g.

Above is the way that judges the momme of silk fabric.
